The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer role-playing video game developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, was announced on May 3, 2012. The game is the first open-ended multiplayer installment of the franchise, and most of the continent of Tamriel is playable in the game. Even with all that preparation in place, don't be surprised if The Elder Scrolls Online diverges from the established canon from time to time. 'History has a habit of being embellished upon by historians, and certainly our in-game, fictional historians are no different,' explains Sage. The Elder Scrolls Online has had several releases in multiple varieties, with different bundles, different branding, and multiple assortments of additional content available that can be obtained in different ways. Naturally, this can be confusing for someone looking to buy the game and/or all additional DLC and expansions. The purpose of this page is to help explain the different options available to help you decide which version is best for what you want to play and which will be the best value for your money.
- 1The Basics
The Basics[edit]
There are three types of content that make up Elder Scrolls Online: the base game, expansions called Chapters, and DLC:
- Elder Scrolls Online: The base game, previously branded as Tamriel Unlimited, is required to experience the below content. It is buy-to-play, meaning that once you have purchased it you have full access to the base game without any further payment or subscriptions required.
- DLC are small - medium-sized pieces of content usually based in group dungeons or zones roughly the size of the tutorial islands. DLC cannot be bought in retail/digital stores, but can be obtained either by buying them in the in-game cash shop (which is called the Crown Store) individually, or subscribing to ESO Plus (see below). About 2-3 DLC are released every year.
- Chapters are expansions that are larger than normal DLC that are released in the second quarter of every year. Chapters are buy-to-play and not included in ESO Plus until the following year, when it gets rebranded as a DLC and the next Chapter is released. There have been four Chapters so far: Morrowind†Summerset and Elsweyr are now part of ESO Plus, while Greymoor is the current separate purchase.
† Note that in its DLC form, the Morrowind DLC gives access to the zone only; access to the Warden class is now a Crown Store add-on.
ESO Plus[edit]
ESO Plus is an optional subscription service for US$14.99/€12.99/£8.99/¥1,944 per month (discounted depending on how many months you choose in a single purchase). Among other bonuses, it gives you access to all DLC (but not Chapters) while subscribed. If your subscription ends, you no longer have access to DLC zones, but you keep all of the items, achievements, etc. that you have earned. The subscription also gives you 1,650 Crowns (in-game premium currency only available to use in the Crown Store) per month, which you can save up to buy the DLC permanently if you so choose.

| |
The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind | Contains the base game and the Morrowind Chapter. This was replaced with the very similar Standard Edition, which also contained the base game and Morrowind chapter. At this time, Morrowind's zone/story was added to the ESO Plus subscription and the Crown Store, the Warden class became a separate purchase in the Crown Store, and Battlegrounds were added to the base game. The digital contents of the Collector's Edition upgrade are available to purchase from the Crown Store. The 'Upgrade' editions, which were only available digitally, do not contain the base game and cannot be played without it; this is for people who already own The Elder Scrolls Online to purchase it at a slightly cheaper price than the version containing the base game. |
|
‡ The 'Morrowind Chapter' included in the bundle includes the Warden class.
Notes[edit]
- If you already have The Elder Scrolls Online and purchase a version of Morrowind, Summerset, Elsweyr, or Greymoor that contains the base game, it can still be applied to your account and is treated the same as the upgrade alone. If it can be found on sale for a cheaper price than the upgrade edition, this makes it the better option of the two.

In spite of their ever-increasing popularity and sophistication, there's no hiding the fact that massively multiplayer online games have lagged behind their offline brethren in one key area: storytelling. Cribbage games for free. Banner single-player titles like Half-Life 2, BioShock, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have captured a sense of wonder and narrative cohesion that's proven all too elusive in online worlds populated by thousands of individuals, each playing the hero of their own tale. Minecraft oculus not working.
With The Elder Scrolls Online, though, ZeniMax Online Studios might just have a leg up on the competition. Not only have they inherited one of the most revered universes in all of gaming, but they're confident that they know what to do with it.'The goal is to make sure the player has a believable and immersive world to play in,' says creative director Paul Sage. 'Staying within the lore of The Elder Scrolls makes that goal possible.'
That's no small feat in a franchise known for its intricate world-building, one where every game features thousands of lines of text that flesh out the tiniest details of its religion, culture, and politics. https://bestqfil738.weebly.com/infectious-void-mac-os.html. 'With over 20 years of lore, one of the challenges is just in knowing as much of it as you can,' Sage says. 'This is why we have a lead loremaster and a lead writer.'
Even with all that preparation in place, don't be surprised if The Elder Scrolls Online diverges from the established canon from time to time. 'History has a habit of being embellished upon by historians, and certainly our in-game, fictional historians are no different,' explains Sage. 'So, the books that people have read in the games aren't necessarily wrong--they just aren't necessarily accurate.'Factual or not, manicured plotlines and age-spanning sagas have only ever been half of The Elder Scrolls' narrative strength. The other vital piece of the formula comes from player-created stories, those insane moments that come from interacting with the world's complex sandbox. You might not remember every single sidequest in Skyrim, but you'll certainly never forget that time you goaded a giant and a frost troll into fighting a dragon on your behalf.

Sage says the team is cognizant of how important it is to recapture that electricity in The Elder Scrolls Online, but they're also aware of the massive challenge posed by the task. 'The beautiful thing about emergent stories is that the developer has very little control over them,' he admits.

The best chance of success, he explains, lies in giving players opportunities to interact with and impact the game world--and, of course, allowing them to do so with their friends by their side. 'There are hundreds of choices the player will make,' Sage boasts, noting that the game lets people decide their outfits, combat strategies, and the fates of the NPCs they encounter. 'Having other people around when those decisions are made, that's when the magic happens. You get to talk about it in real time--at the time when the emotion is the strongest--with the people who witnessed it happen. That's really powerful.'
